Flashlight — 3 weeks Research Probe
Invited by Apple's Industrial Design team, I explored the flashlight as a transformable lighting unit—a deceptively simple object that can adapt to multiple contexts through thoughtful design. Beginning with the telescopic gesture that adjusts beam focus, I reinterpreted this interaction to unlock three core modes: Torch, Night Light, and Lantern. From this foundation, I developed a family of magnetic add-ons that transform the flashlight into a versatile lighting ecosystem: evolving it from emergency tool to domestic light, from portable utility to scenographic element.
3 weeks design project: Flashlight
Design Project brief from Apple ID team:
“We want you to design a flashlight with multiple use cases. We’re looking for details that optimize the use cases you’re designing for. You can communicate your ideas through sketches, renders and 3d modeling — no physical models are expected.”
Add-On — Tube Light
A semi-transparent spring tube with integrated color filter, magnetically attached to the flashlight body. It diffuses the focused beam into a soft, lantern-like ambient glow—ideal for creating atmosphere, outdoor gatherings, or linking multiple units together to form illuminated chains.
Add-On — Fairy Light
An attachment that channels the flashlight beam through fiber-optic wire, creating a delicate line of light—perfect for accent lighting, decorative installations, or subtle wayfinding.

Bedside Lamp & Charging Station
A charging dock that transforms the flashlight into a gentle bedside lamp. Light diffuses downward to prevent glare, while keeping the flashlight fully charged and instantly accessible for nighttime needs.
Wall Lamp & Mirror
A multifunctional wall fixture combining mirror and ambient lighting. The flashlight docks magnetically into the mount, functioning as architectural wall lighting when stationary—yet detaching instantly when portable illumination is needed, seamlessly bridging decorative and functional roles.
